Cadet Teams Event - European Youth Championships

 

Top seeds in the Cadet Boys Teams Event, team of Russia needed only three matches to secure their place in the quarter final at the European Youth Championships in Zagreb. On their way to the top 8, Turkey failed to halt their progress.

 

In the quarter final Russia will meet Germany, Azerbaijan will play against Italy, France against Hungary and Portugal against Sweden.

 

Players ranked at the position no. one and three in Europe, Vladimir SIDORENKO and Lev KATSMAN won both their singles in straight games to underline the dominance.

 

France inflicted the pain in the host nation supporters by beating Croatia in another straight games match.

 

“It is not like the result shows. It was far from easy match. However, we never underestimated the adversaries. We were very focused,” said Lilian BARDET.

 

Germany was only team stretched to full distance in the duel against Moldova. Kay STUMPER and Sven HENNIG gave their team dream start with the victories over Felix COSMOLICI and Vladislav URSU, but Germany failed to seal the match with doubles. In fourth match URSU beat STUMPER to bring match to the decisive encounter. However HENNIG halted Moldova’s further progress.

 

Italy made it to the Round of best 8 after victory against Spain.

 

“There are no easy matches any more and there is no favorite. That is the lesson that my teammate John OYEBODE learned today. He has better position at the rankings comparing to Sergi GRAU, but he lost his encounter. John managed to rose his spirit for doubles , so we were back on tracks,” said Carlo ROSSI who recorded victories against Miguel RUIZ and Sergi GRAU.

 

Sweden beat Ukraine, Portugal succeeded against Belgium, Hungary against Denmark. Azerbaijan with YANG Xinyu and WANG Chenxi overcame Romania.
