Europe vs. Japan in run for titles in Czech Republic
23/06/2011 – At the European Veterans Championships in Liberec after the day off favorite in 40-49 category Peter FRANZ of Germany reached Round of 16 in the men’s Singles Event. Top seeded FRANZ today beat Pawel PAGA of Poland, Milan RABENSEIFNER of Czech Republic, Alexander SAVELYEV of Russia and Pavel REHOREK of Czech Republic.
At the opposite side of the draw Steffen KIRNER of Germany succeeded against Alexandr MOMZEROV of Russia, Manfred SCHULZE of Germany, before Ritchie VENNER create an upset and beat him. Player from England succeeded in straight games to the Round of 16.
In 50-59 category reigning champion YI Ding of Austria overcame Gunter FUHRMANN of Germany, Martin BRAZDA of Czech Republic, another host nation representative Zbynek SPACEK, Reiner KURSCHNER of Germany.
National women’s Czech team coach Miroslav CECAVA also went in full speed. He overcame Mihail STROKIN of Russia, Peter RAIDL of Austria, Goran ALDVIK of Sweden, Josef ZAJIC of Czech Republic
There were no difficulties for Dane Claus PEDERSEN today. In straight games he overcame Miroslav SVEDIK of Czech Republic, Winand LENTZEN of Germany, Reinhard SORGER of Austria, Marian WOZNIAK of Poland and Alex ROSMARIN of Belgium. In the semis he will play against Jiri FAFEK of Czech Republic.
Povilas BAGUZIS of Lithuania was equally impressive against Helmut MERKENTROP of Germany, Milan REGNER of Czech Republic, Rudolf TSCHANZ of Switzerland, Karol KORBEL of Slovakia and Felix KAPLAN of Russia. In semis he will meet Matti LAPPALAINEN of Finland.
In 65-69 category Brian HILL of England is out of the game. Jaroslav KUNZ of Germany took over his place at the top of the draw for the semi final. However Niels RAMBERG justified his position and reached semifinal. In 70-74 Horst LANGER is few steps away from the title as well as Ingvar JOHNSSON in 75-79. Friedrich RUSSLER of Germany is in the penultimate stage of 80-84 category, and Curt OSTERHOLM reached same stage in over 80 category.
In the evening hours Vera BAZZI of Switzerland started her journey in the main draw in 40-49 category with the victory over Tanja MAYER of Germany. Elena LAMONOS of Germany was in charge for the upset in the lower half of the draw. She beat second seed Tatiana KULIEVA of Russia in straight games.
Former USSR star and now Slovakia’s national coach Valentina POPOVA beat Halina SIEWERT of Poland, Daniela BAUMANN of Germany, Eva MAGYAR of Hungary to reach Round of 16. Elmira ANTONYAN BRUNNER of Switzerland is also very convincing in the lower half of the draw.
In the semi final of the 60-64 event on Saturday will play Gertrud RUGE of Germany vs. Elisabeth Ira HUSIN of Belgium. In other match Margaret WELSMAN of England will meet compatriot Diane PEARCE. The duels between Jarmila HUMMELOVA of CzechRepublic vs. Karin RAUSCHER of Germany and Ursula KRUGER of Germany vs. Jutta BARON of Germany will decided the Saturday’s finalists in 65-69 category. In 70-74 Sally BAX of England will play against Heidi WUNNER of Germany and Sylvia TYLER of England will meet compatriot Doreen SCHOFIELD.
In 75-79 category the battles also reached penultimate stage. For the final will play Marianne BLASBERG of Germany vs. compatriot Sigrid MATTHIAS and Italy’s Edith SANTIFALLER-HUBER vs. Nicole PILLIERE of France.
In 80-84 Pamela BUTCHER of England will meet Margit MIERSCH of Germany and Sabine KRAMER and Gisela LANGEN will decide the other all German semis.
